Abe Nunez Signs with Brew Crew Wednesday January 23rd, 2008

Posted by Sean in Geoff Jenkins, Milwaukee Brewers.

“No-Hit” Nunez as they call him over on We Should Be GM’s has signed with the NL Central contenders today.  The 31-year-old infielder signed a minor league deal, which means he might not see a Major League fastball for a while.  Because it was a minor league deal (as opposed to a major league one), terms were not disclosed.  Click for more.

With his addition, Milwaukee’s infield now looks like this:

Prince Fielder, 1B

Ricky Weeks, 2B

JJ Hardy, SS

Bill Hall, 3B/IF

Craig Counsell, IF

Abe Nunez, 3B/IF

Joe Dillon, 1B/2B/LF (nobody)

Vinny Rottino, IF (another nobody)

Alcides Escobar, IF (thrid nobody)

Hernan Iribarren, IF (no one)

and Brad Nelson, CI/OF. With the recent signing of Mike Cameron to offset the departure of Geoff Jenkins to your Philadelphia Phillies, it seems that the Brew Crew are going to carry 5 outfielders and 6 infielders.  Prince, Weeks, Hardy, and Bill Hall are expected to start (reigning Rookie of the year Ryan Braun is moving to LF after committing 26 errors at the hot corner).  Craig Counsell is the only shoo-in as a backup, so “Honest Abe” will have to fight the 4 nobodies on the list for the last spot on the roster.  Since the Brewers like to go with younger guys who get on base more,  my judging is that he will start the year off as the starting third baseman at AAA Nashville, and most likely be called up later in the year.
